Should You Require Deposits for Lash Appointments?

The No-Show Problem
Every lash artist has been there: you block off three hours for a full set, prep your space, and your client doesn't show. No call, no message, just silence. That's not just frustrating — it's lost income you can't get back.
Deposits are the most effective tool for reducing no-shows and last-minute cancellations. When a client has skin in the game, they're far more likely to show up — or at minimum, give you enough notice to fill the slot.
How Much Should You Charge as a Deposit?
The most common deposit structures for lash artists are:
- Flat fee: $25-50 regardless of service. Simple and easy to communicate.
- Percentage of service: 25-50% of the total. Scales with the value of the appointment.
- Full prepayment: 100% upfront. Works well for new clients or high-demand artists with waitlists.
For most independent lash artists, a $30-50 flat deposit for full sets and a $20-25 deposit for fills is a good starting point. It's enough to deter no-shows without feeling like a barrier to booking.
Is a Deposit Refundable?
This is where your cancellation policy comes in. The most common approach:
- Cancellations with 24-48 hours notice: deposit refunded or applied to rescheduled appointment
- Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice: deposit forfeited
- No-shows: deposit forfeited, future bookings may require full prepayment
Whatever you decide, write it down clearly and make sure clients see it before they book. A policy that's buried in fine print won't protect you — and will create conflict when you try to enforce it.
How to Communicate Your Deposit Policy
The most common reason lash artists resist requiring deposits is fear of pushback. Here's the truth: most clients won't think twice about a deposit if it's presented professionally.
Communicate it as a standard part of your booking process — not an apology. "A deposit is required to secure your appointment" is a complete sentence that needs no further explanation.
Include your deposit policy in your booking confirmation, your reminder messages, and your website. The more visible it is, the less friction you'll face when enforcing it.
What About Loyal, Long-Term Clients?
Many lash artists wonder whether to require deposits from established clients who have never been a problem. This is a personal decision, but there are good arguments for applying the policy consistently:
- It's simpler to have one policy than to make exceptions
- Long-term clients who respect you won't mind
- It sets a professional standard regardless of relationship
Some artists grandfather in existing clients and only require deposits from new bookings. Either approach works — what matters is that you're consistent.
The Bottom Line
Requiring deposits is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do to protect your time and income. If you've been hesitant to implement them, start with new clients only and see how it feels. Chances are, you'll wonder why you waited so long.
